The left has trouble with patriotism not because it is the party of humanity but because it is, nationally and internationally, the party of losers. I would propose democracy: it is far less exclusionary, in principle and practice, that nationalism, patriotism or the ideology of capitalism.   Patriotism is proud of a country's virtues and eager to correct its deficiencies; it also acknowledges the legitimate patriotism of other countries, with their own specific virtues. The pride of nationalism, however, trumpets its country's virtues and denies its deficiencies, while it is contemptuous toward the virtues of other countries.

Though the average person may take patriotism for granted as a natural feeling of loyalty to one's country, among philosophers the nature, moral standing, and political significance of patriotism have always been contentious. On the one hand, there are those who defend patriotic loyalty as either a duty or a virtue and extol it as an indispensable condition of a viable polity. A new kind of patriotism. Mark Lawrence Schrad is an associate professor of political science and author of the forthcoming Smashing the Liquor Machine: A Global History of Prohibition.

“Pledging Allegiance: The Politics of Patriotism in America’s Schools.” The title of the book is indicative of its contents; namely, extending awareness about how patriotism affects school, and provoking thought on the implications of a false patriotism, a mindless nationalism that often comes out of schools.   Patriotism these days is like Christmas—lots of people caught up in a festive atmosphere replete with lights and spectacles. We hear reminders about “the true meaning” of Christmas—and we may even mutter a few guilt-ridden words to that effect ourselves—but each of us spends more time and thought in parties, gift-giving, and the other paraphernalia of a secularized holiday than we do.

Patriotism is fundamental to liberty because pride in one’s nation-state, and a willingness to defend it if necessary, is the basis of national independence. Patriotism is the courage of national self-determination.

Patriotism or national pride is the feeling of love, devotion and sense of attachment to a homeland and alliance with other citizens who share the same sentiment.

This attachment can be a combination of many different feelings relating to one's own homeland. Demonstrating patriotism—being “patriotic”—is one of the necessities of being the stereotypical “good citizen.”However, patriotism, like many well-intentioned things, can be harmful when taken to an extreme.

An excellent companion piece to this well written article would be a book entitled Pledging Allegiance: The Politics of Patriotism In America’s Schools which is edited by Joel Westheimer. In it are essays such as Patriotism Is a Bad Idea at a Dangerous Time by Robert Jensen and Patriotism Makes Kids Stupid by Bill Bigelow.

I find it difficult to believe that I belong to such an idiotic, rotten species - the species that actually boasts of its freedom of will, heroism on command, senseless violence, and all of the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism.

Patriotism is the feeling of love, attachment and loyalty to one's country or nation. In a way, you can say that patriotism divides the whole humanity on the basis of nationality.

Patriotism shouldn't be hostile, divisive, and uninformed. To many humanists, this is worth rethinking. The American patriotic impulse was on display last week as a controversy erupted over a. What is a Nation. The Basic Concept of Nationalism. Although the term “nationalism” has a variety of meanings, it centrally encompasses the two phenomena noted at the outset: (1) the attitude that the members of a nation have when they care about their identity as members of that nation and (2) the actions that the members of a nation take in seeking to achieve (or sustain) some.

The Israeli academic, whose books about the past and future of humanity, Sapiens and Homo Deus, have sold in their millions, said Trump’s speech.

First of all, Tagore saw nationalism and patriotism as inseparable twins; both had a cultish nature that amplified the "vulgarity, cruelty, [and] greed" in people and sought to replace humanity Author: Mohammad A. Quayum. Thus patriotism and humanity unite in all that concerns the aid of the sick and wounded soldiers, and the Red Cross Society of Japan has made, not humanity, but patriotism, its start- ing point ; and it is in this that it differs from most of the sister societies of Europe .“Patriotism cannot be our final spiritual shelter; my refuge is humanity.

I will not buy glass for the price of diamonds, and I will never allow patriotism to triumph over humanity as long as I live.” However, this is an adage which has been long forgotten. In today’s world, patriotism trumps humanity by a huge margin. ***.Washington's humanity, patriotism, personal ambition emerge in biographies author of a book on Hoover and a fine life of Thomas E.
