The left has trouble with patriotism not because it is the party of humanity but because it is, nationally and internationally, the party of losers. I would propose democracy: it is far less exclusionary, in principle and practice, that nationalism, patriotism or the ideology of capitalism. Patriotism is proud of a country's virtues and eager to correct its deficiencies; it also acknowledges the legitimate patriotism of other countries, with their own specific virtues. The pride of nationalism, however, trumpets its country's virtues and denies its deficiencies, while it is contemptuous toward the virtues of other countries.
Though the average person may take patriotism for granted as a natural feeling of loyalty to one's country, among philosophers the nature, moral standing, and political significance of patriotism have always been contentious.
